Certain trends in Halloween costumes can be predicted. Election year? Gonna be a lot of the candidates out and about (and even performing at Red Rocks). The year’s biggest movies will have lots of representation. So it was no surprise to see Deadpools, Wolverines, Arts, Patricks, and Tashis out and about. But TikTok was full to bursting with people dressed up as a children’s choir honoring Serge Gainsbourg. Pourquoi le fuck was that happening?
That’s right, this year’s hottest, most extremely online costume was Les Petits Chanteurs d’Asnières, a French children’s choir that honored Serge Gainsbourg by dressing up as him on French TV in 1988. They sang his song, “J’e suis venu te dire que je m’en vais” (“I came to tell you that I’m leaving”), donning fake stubble, sunglasses, and grey hair. They also carried whiskey and cigs, to complete the look. The choir changed the song’s lyrics to “We came to tell you we like you,” a much more upbeat message than Gainsbourg’s real song. And the dude was touched. In the viral video, you can see him tearing up at this oddest of tributes.
Still, we don’t have an answer to the question «pourquoi maitenant? » TikTok user @miumiumorkie suspects the Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest may have triggered some people’s memories of the clip. It’s also a great group costume, and easy to put together. Do you own a blazer? A cup? You’re already halfway there. Below are just a few of the petits Serges that drank and smoked through Halloween 2024.
