The only constant thing about everything under the sun is ‘change.’ It is the change that leads to the rise and fall of icons, legacies, kings, and queens. Today, as we look back at the dust and ruins of the fallen kingdoms, a name emerged that has been forgotten over centuries. The man in question once ruled the South film industry, gave established names a run for their money, and even had some of the biggest Bollywood movies lined up for him. However, when he was at the peak of his career when everything appeared to be falling in the right place, his career took a major hit from which he could never recover. He is none other than Mirza Abbas Ali, who once shared the screen with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, and then vanished from the face of the entertainment industry. He even left the country and did odd jobs to survive.
The fallen star – Mirza Abbas Ali
Mirza Abbas Ali started his career as a model in 1994 while he was still in college. In a very short period, in 1996, he debuted with the Tamil film ‘Kadhal Desam.’ The movie fetched him both critical and commercial success.
He rose to fame instantly and was bombarded with offers. He worked in both Telugu and Tamil industry. ‘Priya O Priya,’ ‘Raja,’ and ‘Rajahamsa’ were a few big project names from Telugu in which he starrer and in Tamil he did ‘Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu,’ ‘Padayappa,’ and ‘Suyamvaram.’ All of these were huge box-office successes.
He also played a small role in Kamal Haasan and Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Hey Ram,’ after which he got his biggest break with ‘Kandukondain Kandukondain.’ He starred opposite Aishwarya Rai, in the romantic drama, which also starred Mammootty, Ajith Kumar, and Tabu. And the list of his hits didn’t end there. He soon got the second lead in ‘Minnale.’
Then in 2002, he made his Bollywood debut with ‘Ansh’ but here his luck didn’t favour him. Gradually, a star who was counted among the most bankable actors of Tamil headed towards a downfall. Around 2006, when he was at the peak of his career, he said no to many South projects to star in Hindi cinema. However, his only two Hindi films – ‘Ansh’ and ‘Aur Phir’ – failed.
He had other movies in the pipeline but because of one or the other reason, they were shelved. This led to a long gap in his films as a lead star. He then started playing second lead to other stars who were less popular than him in Tamil and Telugu movies. He went against the advice of his inner circle and thus, soon he was sidelined to cameos and supporting roles in Telugu films.
Following 2011, the actor experienced a period where several of his lead roles were put on hold. He transitioned to working on television shows instead. Years later, in an interview with the YouTube channel Rednool, he mentioned that he had lost interest in acting at that time, which led him to leave the industry and relocate to New Zealand. He did odd jobs there and in 2023 he returned to India, but hasn’t signed any new project.
