Vivek Oberoi has now turned into a very successful businessman now, after getting immense love as an actor for memorable movies like ‘Company’, ‘Saathiya’. While he’s completely soaked himself into business, the actor doesn’t quite like the fact that now movies are largely judged by the amount of money that they make. As the actor spoke about his film ‘Saathiya’ being memorable even after 22 years of its release, during a chat with ETimes, we asked him if today we have such movies being made. We also discussed how only the numbers of a movie are a huge talking point today.
The actor reacted and said, “I think if you talk to your mom, your grandma, their association with cinema is an emotion. They say, I loved this film, I have this memory associated with that film – for me, that is success. The rest of them are transactions. Today we are used to scrolling social media, listening to opinions that say that this movie is a success because it did these numbers – like Rs 100 crore, Rs 500 crore, Rs 1000 crore. The purity of the passion is gone.”
He further added that these days, it’s a struggle to even be honest about your opinions about any movie. He added, “Now a days, it’s difficult for people to express their honest opinion also. For example, if you go to see a film and say, ‘I didn’t like it’, people will be like, ‘that film has done 500 crores, how can you not like it?’ So, the creative expression of art and the business aspect has just intermingled a lot now. Perceptions become that the merit value, box office collection is about how good a film is. I don’t know what the box office collection of ‘Laapataa Ladies‘ is, but I loved the film.”
In this interview, Vivek also revealed that he’s turned businessman so that he does not have to do crappy movies just to earn a living. Hence, he waits now, only to choose a project which he truly feels like doing.
