Sonali Bendre has won over cancer and continues to excel in the film industry with the same passion as before. Six years ago, she bravely disclosed her cancer diagnosis, openly sharing her journey to recovery. Her candid discussions about her condition and her inspiring path to healing have provided hope and motivation to countless individuals, serving as a light of strength for other survivors.
In a candid podcast interview with Humans of Bombay, the actress openly discussed her struggle with cancer and reflected on how she navigated through the moment that changed her life.
In a recent interview, Sonali revealed, “I was given a cancer diagnosis while filming a reality show. It was quite startling. I questioned how I could develop cancer. I initially believed the cancer to be quite tiny, but as the tests progressed, we learned that it was not a minor illness when we went to the doctor, had the tests done, and had the cancer identified. My husband and my doctor looked pale when the PET scan was performed.”
Sonali further explained, “A PET scan revealed the location of cancer cells within your body as well as the extent of their spread. My PET scan results showed that the cancer had grown throughout my body to the point that it resembled a Christmas tree.”
Upon hearing the diagnosis, Sonali tried to ignore it by sleeping, hoping things would improve upon waking. However, the reality remained unchanged. In response, her husband took the proactive step of arranging overseas treatment, prompting them to leave their child behind. Throughout this challenging period, Sonali found herself embroiled in frequent family disputes, feeling increasingly nervous.
Bendre also recalled, “While receiving treatment, I lost my temper with the doctors. They told me I had only a thirty percent chance of surviving. How could the physicians say that I wondered? I asked them repeatedly, “How could I have cancer?”
Sonali is best known for her roles in films like ‘Sarfarish‘, ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’, and ‘Duplicate’, among others.
