Emraan Hashmi explained in an interview with Shubhankar Mishra that his grandmother played a significant role in his decision to become an actor. Despite her influence, she was also fearful for him due to the many ups and downs she had experienced in her own life.
The ‘Murder‘ star further shared that his grandmother was initially protective and often advised him to consider alternative career options, fearing the industry’s instability.
He mentioned that many newcomers are rejected overnight. It was only after Mahesh Bhatt expressed confidence in Emraan’s potential and decided to launch him that his grandmother felt reassured. Emraan explained that his grandmother’s doubts stemmed from his lack of childhood dreams of acting, conventional looks, dancing skills, or notable achievements in school. Consequently, she found it hard to believe in his potential as an actor.

The actor shared that Bhatt was very straightforward before they started working on their first film together. Bhatt made it clear that their collaboration was not a charitable endeavor; if Emraan’s acting didn’t resonate with the audience, he wouldn’t hesitate to remove him from the film. Bhatt’s tough approach, which often involved pushing actors to their limits and instilling fear, helped Emraan develop his skills. Emraan believes this lack of consolation from Bhatt was instrumental in his growth as an actor.
Hashmi, initially not expecting much recognition for his debut film, was pleasantly surprised by the audience’s positive response to his character, which he shot for in just seven days. He shared that Mahesh Bhatt was so impressed with his performance that he held a special screening for Emraan’s grandmother, proudly declaring that a star had been born in the family.
