After years of speculation, Johnny Depp may finally be making a comeback as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow in the next ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film.
Eight years after the release of ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’, rumours have been rife about a new Pirates film on the cards. However, multiple delays and casting issues have seemingly further pushed back the sixth film of the Billion dollar franchise.
Now, according to a new report on The DisInsider, Walt Disney Studios is quietly preparing to begin production on the next instalment at a Hollywood sound stage. While no official timeline has been set, the report suggests that this film will mark Depp’s long-awaited return to the beloved role of Captain Jack Sparrow.Producer Jerry Bruckheimer had previously confirmed in December that two separate scripts were in development—one featuring Depp and another taking the franchise in a different direction.
However, at the time, the actor’s involvement was uncertain due to his highly publicized legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard and his fallout with Disney. While the makers could have opted to move forward without Depp, the latest report indicates that amidst fan demands for the actor’s return as the famed character, the studio may just be paving the way for his return.
Prior to Bruckheimer’s statements, multiple rumours had surfaced regarding the franchise’s future, including a potential reboot or a new instalment led by actress Ayo Edebiri. Reports indicated that ‘The Bear’ actress was being tapped to introduce the franchise to a younger audience. However, with Depp’s reported return, the direction of the series may now be more aligned with its original timeline which began in 2003 with ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl’.
