Ranbir Kapoor, one of the biggest superstars of his generation with hits like Animal, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar, and Brahmastra: Part One: Shiva, credits his father, Rishi Kapoor, for teaching him the value of money.
In a candid conversation on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast, Ranbir revealed that his father put him on a very tight budget while he was studying at an acting school in the United States. Despite coming from a privileged background, Ranbir was made to live like an ordinary student, as his father never wanted him to feel entitled. His budget allowed him just enough to afford a McDonald’s meal for lunch and dinner.
After returning to India and beginning his career as an assistant director to Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Black, Ranbir faced another tough lesson from his father. Rishi Kapoor took away his car, leaving him to commute via public transport for his work. He even stopped Ranbir’s pocket money, making him experience financial hardships firsthand. Ranbir admitted that his father never explicitly explained his actions, but the message was clear—real life is tough, and one must learn to navigate its struggles independently.
These experiences deeply shaped Ranbir’s perspective on money and responsibility, instilling in him a sense of discipline and humility. Today, as a successful actor, he appreciates the values his father imparted, acknowledging that such lessons played a crucial role in shaping his career and character.
Ranbir Kapoor has a huge slate of films lined up for the next few years starting with his next being Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War with Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayan with Sai Pallavi. He also has Animal Park -sequel to Animal with Sandeep Reddy Vanga and he’s also in talks for Dhoom 4 and he recently confirmed about Brahmastra 2 happening with Ayan Mukerji.
