The brothers, who helmed the blockbuster hits ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, are reportedly in early talks with Marvel Studios to direct the next two ‘Avengers’ movies. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this potential hiring concludes months-long search by the studio for filmmakers to oversee the fifth and sixth Avengers films.
Multiple directors were considered, including ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ director Shawn Levy, the report indicates that negotiations with the Russos are currently on in the early stages. The Russo brothers made their Marvel debut with the Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson starrer ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ in 2014. The film’s massive box office success prompted their return for ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016), ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018), and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019). Collectively, their Marvel films have grossed $6.681 billion, with Endgame standing as the second highest-grossing movie of all time globally, earning $2.79 billion.
Should the brothers return to helm the films, they will have to take on the task of redirecting the course of the MCU which was expected to culminate with the fifth Avengers movie, initially titled ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’. The future of the film was hit with uncertainty after Jonathan Majors, who featured as the time-traveling villain Kang, was fired following his conviction for assault and harassment in December.
Meanwhile, the sixth Avengers film, ‘Secret Wars’, is a storyline the Russos have long expressed interest in adapting.
This development marks a significant achievement for the Russos, who transitioned from TV comedy, with shows like ‘Arrested Development’ and ‘Community’, to blockbuster films. Since their success with Marvel, the Russo brothers have ventured into streaming platforms, directing the Tom Holland crime drama ‘Cherry’ (2021) for Apple and the big-budget action film ‘The Gray Man’ (2022) for Netflix. They are also directing the upcoming sci-fi adventure ‘The Electric State’ for Netflix.
The duo have also been working on building a spy universe with the Prime Video series ‘Citadel’. They are expected to direct the second season of the show starring Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden in the lead.
