Madhura Pandit Jasraj, the veteran filmmaker and wife of the late music maestro Pandit Jasraj, passed away early Wednesday in Mumbai due to age-related ailments. She was 86.
The last rite rituals were performed at the Oshiwara crematorium in Mumbai later this evening in the presence of her family and closest friends from the industry.
Family members and close friends gathered at her residence prior to the funeral to offer their prayers and condolences.Among the mourners were her son, music director Shaarang Dev Pandit, and her extended family, including singer Shweta Pandit, Pandit Jasraj’s grand-niece, and music director Lalit Pandit, all of whom were visibly emotional.
Several other well-known personalities attended the funeral to pay their respects, including Vijayeta Pandit, actor Annu Kapoor, classical singer Padma Shri Soma Ghosh, flautist Pandit Ronu Majumdar, and tabla maestro Aditya Kalyanpur.
Madhura Pandit Jasraj was the daughter of legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram and had a distinguished career of her own, wearing many hats as a director, producer, and writer. She married Pandit Jasraj in 1962 and is survived by her two children, Shaarang Dev Pandit and TV personality Durga Jasraj.
In her career, she directed plays, films, and authored books, including the biography of her father, V Shantaram: The Man Who Changed Indian Cinema. In 2010, she made history as the oldest debutant feature film director with the Marathi film ‘Aai Tujha Aashirwad’. The film included songs composed by her husband, Padma Vibhushan awardee, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 90.
She has also directed a biographical short film on her husband Pandit Jasraj, titled ‘Sangeet Martand Jasraj’.
