Japanese authorities’ recent action has brought smiles to various anime makers and lovers. Reportedly, the Miyagi Prefectural Police, in collaboration with the Tome Police Station took legal action against a website that was accused of leaking extensive spoilers of popular anime and movies.
They made an arrest in the matter and took three individuals in custody for allegedly violating copyright laws of high-profile works, including ‘Godzilla Minus One’ and the anime ‘Overlord III,’ as per CODA. This is the first legal case in Japan on transcribing copyrighted stories that infringe upon intellectual property rights. This highlights the severity of the matter and takes into consideration the loss suffered by anime creators.
According to Japan’s Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), which aims to prevent unauthorized distribution of creative content, the arrested individuals including a company manager from Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward, allegedly transcribed entire plotlines, character dialogues, actions, scene-by-scene details, and other narrative details without taking required permission. CODA’s statement explains that the website that the accused operated had copyrighted images. Further, the website was making money with the content through advertising, which according to them is a serious breach of copyright law.
Further, their transcribing allegedly went beyond the permissible limits of content quoting and fair use. According to CODA’s statement such activities lead to a fall in the interest of the audience in purchasing or viewing the official releases. This further leads to a major setback in revenue generation for the respective industry.
There are also extensive summaries available on the illegal site, then gives the open to unethnical download content. Also, as aforementioned strict action is expected to be taken against the site for using advertising for monetization.
With this legal action, the Japanese authorities have a step to protect the copyright laws of the anime creators. The arrest signifies the seriousness of the matter and the stringent steps that the authorities involved are ready to undertake.
