The Malayalam film Marco, starring Unni Mukundan and directed by Haneef Adeni, has become one of the biggest hits of 2024. The action thriller surpassed Rs 100 crore at the global box office in 23 days, marking Unni Mukundan’s first career milestone. The film remains popular in its final weeks.
Marco has done exceptionally well in various regions. In Kerala, it earned around Rs 45 crore, while the Hindi-speaking areas brought in about Rs 12 crore. The film began with just Rs 1 lakh on its first day in North India but gained popularity thanks to positive reviews and thrilling action scenes.
Released just before Christmas, Marco is now the seventh highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2024 globally. Experts believe that if the film continues its success for a few more weeks, it could reach Rs 110 crore at the worldwide box office.
Despite facing tough competition from Mohanlal’s Barroz and Tovino Thomas‘s Identity, Marco remained the top pick for audiences in Kerala. However, its collections slowed down slightly in the fourth weekend with the release of Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram.
Amid its box office success, Marco is set to debut on digital platforms soon. Sources suggest that Netflix has secured the film’s streaming rights and will release it in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. The OTT premiere is expected in late January or early February 2025, about 45 days after its theatrical release. The streaming version may feature extended scenes and extra content not shown in theaters.
Marco is a spin-off of the 2019 film Mikhael, centering on the villain Marco. The revenge thriller follows Marco, portrayed by Unni Mukundan, as he returns from Italy to avenge the murder of his adopted blind brother, Victor. Before his death, Victor identified Russell Isaac as his killer, sparking Marco’s intense pursuit of justice.
