The Kinnar Akhada is reportedly facing major internal turmoil following the appointment of former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni as Mahamandaleshwar which has sparked controversy.
According to the latest reports, Rishi Ajay, the founder of the group is said to be taking steps to address the escalating tensions and rift created over the past days. The conflict arises from differing opinions regarding the decision to appoint the former actress as Mahamandaleshwar, and has reportedly prompted the Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi to step down from her leadership role.
Since her appointment early this week, some members have question the actress’ past and her relatively recent association with the transgender community. Meanwhile, those supporting her argue that Kulkarni’s public profile could bring visibility and resources to the community.
Transgender Kathavackak Jagatguru Himangi Sakhi Maa also made headlines for speaking up against Kulkarni’s appointment. Speaking to ANI, Himangi said, “Mamta Kulkarni has been made Mahamandleshwar by the Kinnar Akhada for publicity. Society knows her past very well. She was even jailed in the past in connection with drug cases. Suddenly, she arrives in India, participates in the Maha Kumbh, and is given the position of Mahamandleshwar. This needs investigation.”
With the controversy refusing to die down, Tripathi is now expected to formally step down from her role, thus giving way to a shakeup in the leadership and questions arising over selection criteria for a Mahamandaleshwar appointment.
Although she has not officially stepped down, reports state that an announcement on the same is expected to be made public soon.
