Rajkumar Hirani and Sooraj Barjatya are the top successful filmmakers in Hindi cinema. Hirani is known for making films with social messages, while Barjatya is famous for his family-oriented movies. In a recent interview with Komal Nahta, Rajkumar Hirani was asked which of Sooraj Barjatya’s films he would remake, and which one Barjatya would remake of his.
Hirani shared his thoughts on ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun‘ in a conversation with Komal Nahta on his YouTube channel, Game Changers. He explained that the film doesn’t really have a strong storyline, with the main conflict only appearing at the end. Despite this, Hirani was amazed at how Barjatya managed to keep the audience engaged throughout. He called it “unbelievable” and said that when he first watched the film, he wasn’t yet a filmmaker. But later, he realized how impressive it was that Barjatya was able to make such a captivating film without a major story.
Hirani also joked that if Barjatya were to remake one of his films, it should be ‘Sanju’. He said, “If ever he chooses to remake any of my films, I think it should be Sanju because he will turn it into something else altogether.” Hirani laughed as he said this.
In the same conversation, Hirani addressed the accusations that ‘Sanju’ was made to “whitewash” Sanjay Dutt’s image. He recalled a moment when he was asked about it during an interview. He responded by pointing out that the film had shown various aspects of Dutt’s life, including his struggles with drugs, his controversial relationships, and his past mistakes, such as keeping a gun. Hirani emphasized that the film portrayed these moments honestly, even showing Dutt’s efforts to get rid of the gun. He explained that public perceptions of Dutt were based on what they had read, and not on a true, firsthand understanding of his life.
Furthermore, Rajkumar Hirani has not yet announced his next directorial project. His most recent film, ‘Dunki’, starred Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu in lead roles.
